The Republican War on Science

5 stars (Global Warming, evolution incommensurable issues ) - I found this to be an eloquent but flawed indictment of the ways in which conservatives are doing an endrun around science to promote their various agendas. But as a science supporter, but a Darwin critic, I was a little alarmed by the bad advice the author received from the very peer review bodies he promotes. The problem is that, for example, global warming, about which the book is excellent, and evolution, the most confusing of the issues, are not really in the same category. We can demand science on the issue of global warming, and expose conservative fraud, but if we demand science on evolution, then we should subject the current reign of Darwinian theory to scrutiny, there to find that, as theory, its scientific status is open to question. The behavior of creationists is a very distracting noise here, because it drives science defenders further into dogma, and into a hole. The author shows how relying on the standard sources of science advice, like the NCSE, will simply fill your head with the Darwinian boilerplate syndrome, which, whatever else their failings, the rightwing critics are well aware of. Having studied Darwinian theory carefully from the suppressed science critics they realize that they can trump the wrongly educated Dawkins/science generation. It seemed impossible ten years ago, now it's happening. Time to wake up on Darwin's theory, which means accepting the reality of evolution, but looking critically on the theory of natural selection. Science journalists ought to learn to be skeptical of the failed peer review system in biology and evolution. It's going to be the undoing of science, and one dreads to think what the next ten years will bring. Beyond that, many of the other issues raised make for an insightful expose, it is a pity the author is suckered into the Darwin trap. 5 stars (Global warming, evolution incommensurable issues. ) - I found this to be an eloquent but flawed i...

Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

The Almanac of American Politics- 2006 Almanac of American Politics

5 stars (A Fix For Political Junkies) - If you love politics - this is your driver's manual. I only wish it was published sooner after the election. You will find nearly everything you want to know about every Governor, Senator and Congressman plus details from their district - voting results for president, demographics, and history. I have bought this book every election cycle since 1984 and I keep going back to each one for information. If you love politics - this book needs to be in your library! Michael Barone is a genius - catch him on Fox News and don't forget to read another one of his books "Our Country: The Shaping of America From Roosevelt to Reagan." 1 stars (A Once Great Series Contiues Its Slide Down the Tubes) - What was once an indispensable guide to US politics has been steadily ruined over the years by the shrill, sanctimonious editorializing of Michael Barone. I used to by new editions of this series every two years but quit several years ago because I was getting less information and more op-ed preaching. I did pick up a copy of this edition at a local book store and spent a great deal of time flipping thorough it and saw that little has changed. Barone is simply a blind apologists for the Bush administration and contemptuously dismisses anyone who does not subscribe to his philosophy as merely being a part of the "feminist left." It is such a shame, as a lot of the information in here is valuable to someone with an interest in US politics and elections. It is too bad Barone's ego has gotten in the way and ruined a once great series. 2 stars (The Red State Guide to Congress) - If everything is going to be divided into red state/blue state this is certainly the red state guide to congress with CQ's Politics in America the Blue State one. Barone disgustingly endorses the swift boat people's campaign against John Kerry but as is noted on the back Barone is a Fox "News" commentator. Barone takes the Republican line on a lot of things. Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff- Christ-s Childhood Pal

5 stars (funny and intelligent- it hurts!!) - This is one of the funnier books I have read in a long time. My family kept coming in the room to see what I was laughing at. Someone gave me this book when I was really ill and the laughter was sorely needed. It served it's purpose. Even to the religious, I imagine it would be hard not to laugh. If you can't laugh at yourself... especially when someone is so intelligently poking fun at you? Then it's just a shame- because this book is too funny to be missed... it has been circulated through my family and friends and everyone has had a good laugh! 5 stars (Biff is THE MAN) - I laughed out loud until it hurt - and it felt great. I would never have left xtianity if the followers I encountered were full of the good humor Biff displays. For all of the laughs, there are also insights to be gainned here as to how to answer the obnoxiouly overused question of WWJD? 4 stars (Laugh out loud, wet your pants funny!!) - If you want to read a book that will make you laugh until you cry, read 'Lamb'. This the book that will make you laugh so hard, that others around you will think your crazy. The subject matter is irreverant, but meant in fun. I really don't think anyone would be offended. Biff, is the loveable idiot friend of Jesus. And what an idiot he is! I love that guy. ...

It Takes a Family - Conservatism and the Common Good

1 stars (Lacking Respect for Others) - In forty brief chapters Santorum speaks about conservatism, marriage and the American family through the lense of his Catholic faith. He describes Americans as "stewards" whose "task is to secure and increase this patrimony [our inheritance] for our children". What is this patrimony? It is social, economic, moral, cultural, and intellectual "capital". Santorum believes that the family "is at the center of all the types of capital". But his is a rigid and exclusive definition of family - there can only be one mother and one father. Nor is it the family found in the Bible since those often included multiple wives and concubines. It is subtitled, "Conservatism and the common good". The difference between liberals and conservatives is their concept of freedom. Santorum says liberals, or, as he derogatively calls them, "village elders", want "the freedom to be and to do whatever [they] want - freedom to choose, irrespective of the choice, freedom without limits (with the obligatory caveat that you can't hurt anyone else directly)." Opposed to this is the conservative view of freedom. "Properly defined, liberty is freedom coupled with responsibility to something bigger or higher than the self. It is the pursuit of our dreams with an eye toward the common good." The question is who gets to define what is meant by the common good? My guess would be conservatives. Further, "the foundational social unit that instills a devotion to such liberty and that stands against [often sexual] No-Fault Freedom's toxic effects is the traditional family." "Village elders" view human nature differently than conservatives. Santorum believes "conservatives follow the traditional Judeo-Christian worldview, which includes the concept of original sin .... A view of human beings as fallen creatures given to sinfulness." And later, "the truth is that human beings are not born naturally inclined to do the right thing." Is he still livin...

Fallen

4 stars (They're Only Human, After All) - " Fallen ", Daivd Maine's newest work of fiction, illuminates the reader with a powerful and in-depth interpretation of the Bible's account of the first family. He thoroughly explores the psychology of the emotions that drove Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel, revealing them for what they are, the basis for all humankind. He begins the novel at "the end" and slowly unravels the mysteries behind their motives as each chapter progresses toward "the beginning." This book satisfies the curiosity of anyone who has ever wondered "why" with regards to the story of the first family of dysfunction and the original fall from grace. 5 stars (" Fallen " as sacred as the religious text from which this story is adapted) - David Maine's narration of the story of Cain and Abel in his latest masterpiece, " Fallen ", is perhaps as precious as the age-old biblical tale from which he draws inspiration. Once again, Maine revamps the seemingly familiar religious text into an accessible, heart-warming and witty account of two brothers struggling to understand each other. Captured in varying first-hand narratives, Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel offer individual perspectives about the value of love, sin, and one's inherent responsibility to God ultimately shedding a whole new light upon the Garden of Eden and the aftermath that ensues. ...

The Red Tent

3 stars (Just okay for me) - I liked the idea of expanding on Dina's story. However, the content was sometimes a little to personal, at times gross, for me. I was also taken aback when I saw how much Diamante deviates from the actual text. This is not just an expansion of the story, but sometimes was outright false. A good story if not taken literally. 5 stars (Under a Wonderful Tent) - In terms of plot and charcter development, this book was wonderful. Based on charcters of the bible, the story explores the lives of the women in the bible which we never really got to know. Diamant has created a wonderful story about the women of biblical times, our fore-mothers Rebecca, Sarah, Rachel, and Leah, from Dinah's point of view. However, it is not any way offense to men. You need not be familiar with the bible to enjoy this book. If you are, you'll certainly recognize stories and characters from the old testament. Another work of fiction I might suggest that explores women and their stake in the Christian faith is John Mackowicz's The Last Martyr. With a similar theme, it portrays women in a positive light. 5 stars (A Terrrific Read) - This book is a story of Dinah, a character from the old testament that we know little about. It is the story of her life and her family in biblical times. There were things I didn't know about really, like the multiple wives and marrying close relatives. But it was in some ways very romantic, and sometimes heartbreaking. Dinah was a very strong woman. Also, I learned alot about what it was like for women when men were in charge of everything. But women were still a mystery to men, and what went on in the red tent was only for women to know. I really liked this book, it was hard for me to put it down once I started. ...

The Cannabis Grow Bible- The Definitive Guide to Growing Marijuana for Recreational and Medical Use

5 stars (Source: Greg Explains It All For You - Isn't That Fabulous?) - Greg Green is an excellent head, no question. He's at once big cannabis fan and informative, talkative without being drifty. The problem is that Greg Green is trying to talk to the misinformed grower. That means those who have not read Greg Green but grow, should read Greg Green at least once, and this is the book to read. He has lots to say. I read about growers, and met a few, not so long who admitted that even they do not understand a lot of what was written before this book about growing, claimed Ganja cultivation information vagueness and fortunately all that is cleared up in reading this book. As a consequence I guess of other literature Green gives you a good deal of information pointing out the nonsense peppered stuff with some really horrid misunderstandings and errors gone by unnoticed throughout the years, most of them inaccurate folk tales about the herb and how it grows, even repeated quite recently. If you ever hoped that a marijuana manuscript would be vetted by editors or someone with a solid science background, or better yet, collaborated with a scientist on the writing, the answer is this book. I can't really recommend any else for such a valid analysis of different ways to grow the plant. The reader interested in how to grow should start here and those who thought they new it all should take another look. It does not just present you with information, it puts everything together. Emphasis on 'everything'. 5 stars (If you love marijuana but hate buying it, this is for you) - I will admit it, converting my basement and part of the back garden into MY own pot grow never really appealed to me. So when I began some indoor plants for outdoors, I used this book for its principles and learned there is no reason why I should not be able to create a monster patch. I must admit you need room sized spaces to work with to get big crops even though I could have easily given away lots of ...

Event Marketing- How to Successfully Promote Events- Festivals- Conventions- and Expositions

4 stars (Very Useful and Easy to Follow) - Event Marketing explores the promotions industry. Though it is a textbook, Hoyle delightfully surprises the reader by writing in a witty style. Why intimidate or bore the reader when you can engage them? Hoyle takes this obvious, but overlooked, premise and runs with it as he explains the events promotions business. Like Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which also has case histories and strategies in how to promote events in a low-cost fashion, Hoyle seeks to turn a confusing and frantic arena into one that, like all other areas, is more easily understood once clear and discrete steps have been demonstrated. The personal examples at the end of each chapter only serve to add credibility and weight to Hoyle's words. 5 stars (Raves for Event Marketing by Leonard H. Hoyle) - When I began reading this book, I knew it was a textbook and expected the normal dry, wordy textbook in which information is buried under an avalance of prose. I was delighted to find a work that was clear, complete, informative, and interesting to read. I found that I looked forward to each chapter and subject. The information is presented in prose, lists of important topics, and highlighting of certain need-to-know material in such a way that cross-refencing and finding previously studied material are amazingly accessible. Added bonuses are the quotes before each chapter and the personal experiences at the end of each chapter. The suggestions about organization, multitasking, and people management are so original and all-encompassing that I heartily recommend this book for everyone -- not only those interesting in planning events. 5 stars (so helpful!!) - The great insight on how to reach new event attendees was very helpful. I appreciated the variety of events that were mentioned in the book, along with the helpful appendice chocked full of information. Definitely a great purchase. ...

Introduction to Telecom Billing - Usage Events- Call Detail Records- and Bill Cycles

4 stars (Good Introduction) - This is a very good starting guide for somebody not used to billing processeses. Moreover there is not so much books dealing with this discipline. I am lookinf forward the full version if there gonna any... 3 stars (Good High-Level Overview for Beginners) - This is a good, but not terribly polished, high-level overview of telecom billing processes. If you've spent any time at all with telecom billing systems you'll be familiar with 95% of the information in this document, if not more. The material is appropriate for anyone who's getting involved with telecom billing for the first time or who has been working on the periphery of the billing systems and would like to know more. Don't expect a lot of detail - there can't be a lot in a document that contains only 31 pages of content written using large type and a lot of white space. For example, the entire section on Hardware and Software consists of the following paragraph: "The hardware usually includes high performance computers that operate proprietary software. Due to the complexity of hardware and software billing systems, continuous training is required in order to ensure quality services to the customers and to provide revenue assurance." 4 stars (Introduction to Telecom Billing) - This is a good book for anyone who needs a quick and succint introduction on the billing process in Telecom industry without getting into technical details.
